That Metaverse Vibe
2022
When we first dive into the metaverse and other novel technologies, our initial reaction is awe. Yet, as the layers peel back, we quickly transition from wonder to dread, seeing the darker facets they hold. This pattern, which has emerged in everything from social media to platforms like Chat GTP and Stable Diffusion, captures our attention. We oscillate between heralding these innovations as life-altering miracles to perceiving them as existential threats.
A poignant theory suggests that the metaverse, in its early stages, is an exclusive realm for the elite 1%. The rest of us merely observe from the fringes. Yet, there’s a belief that as these technological wonders become more accessible, the metaverse could evolve into a space where the masses revel in digital wonders while the privileged few relish the authentic world outside.
Such musings deeply resonated with me, as reflected in “That Metaverse Vibe.” This piece is an exploration of our complex relationship with emerging tech. The vibrancy of pop culture visuals rush at us, mirroring the breakneck pace of technological integration in our lives. Accompanying this is the melody of “Ain’t We Got Fun,” a testament to finding joy despite financial constraints. As the tune progresses, the ambient soundscape transforms—from genuine laughter and marvel at fresh tech experiences to chilling screams that underscore the chilling revelations of their darker aspects. At the intersection of wonder and horror, the artwork stands, capturing the essence of our ever-evolving relationship with technology.
